Are nutritional supplements effective? This is a good question! First of all, it's important to understand that taking vitamins in pill form is not as effective as a balanced diet. You should not take vitamins in place of eating nutritiously or in place of meals in general. Many people seem to think that you can take vitamins and drink liquids and that this is sufficient to keep your body healthy, that this might be an effective weight loss regimen. That is not only a poor assumption (and a very inaccurate one), it is an extremely dangerous mindset. The fact is that your body needs food. If you are trying to lose weight (and especially if you want to keep it off) you should not use nutritional supplements as an alternative to food intake altogether. The reason relates to the same reason you should not starve yourself. Taking nutritional supplements in place of food in general is very similar to anorexia, and by many doctors' standards it would be considered a bona fide form of anorexia. Starving yourself can work for a few days or even a week to stop you from gaining weight, but after a certain amount of time passes, something strange happens: your body begins to retain fat. If you don't want your body to retain fat, do not replace meals with nutritional supplements. The term supplement means to add something to something that already exists. If you look at the instructions on vitamin bottles, you'll see that vitamins are intended to be taken with meals, not in lieu of eating! With all that said, nutritional supplements can be effective in supplementing as they are intended. Yes, they can help you maintain a healthy and fit body. You should combine vitamin intake with a proper food plan and a reasonable exercise regimen. See your doctor before you engage in any of the above. Ask your physician about the supplements you would like to take, to be sure that they do not interfere with any medications or other medical conditions which may have interactions with the supplements.
