Amazing Thailand: What’s so ‘amazing’ of it?

Thailand is a traveler’s delight. There is no denying this fact. Every year a huge number of interested people from all over the globe travel to this land which has earned for itself the name ‘Amazing Thailand’. May be you too have decided for a travel to this great land. So, it would be quite wise on your part to get yourself acquainted with some of the important aspects of Thailand. Apart from the great geographic location, the beaches, all other bounties of nature, there is something very unique to the Thai society. It is better that you know a thing or two about the katoey before setting your foot on the Thai soil.

Katoey is actually the Thai nickname for who are often called as the ladyboy. A ladyboy or a Katoey is one who is originally a man but has undergone a change of sex to look as a woman. To put in other words, a Katoey is a transvestite or a transsexual. Many people are of the opinion that this trend of the ladyboy in Thai society is a result of the western attitude through travel and tourism. But that is as wrong a conception as anything. People who are transsexuals or the so called transvestites are being accepted within the mainstream society in the west only since a last few years. But, Thailand has been treating them as the third sex for quiet a long time now. There is no social disparity towards a ladyboy or Katoey as they are popularly called in this part of the world.

Many people want to distinguish the Katoey as a class of people separate from the ladyboy. They are of the opinion that one should be called as Katoey only after he has undergone some surgery. Else the person has to be called as a ladyboy. Whatever the case be, the fact is, there is an unbelievably high population of the Katoeys in the urban areas of Thailand. The main reason behind this is perhaps the tolerant attitude of the Thai society on a whole.

The term Katoey is actually a local Thai word and is used to denote any man who acts or behaves as a woman. However, there are several of these Katoeys who opt for a profession in places like the cabaret or gogo bar. Quite naturally they spend a lot, both in terms of time and money, in order to flaunt an appearance that is quite attractive to the people. The dresses they wear or the poses they strike are quite revealing and inviting. There are several generalized ideas about the Katoeys. For instance they are considered to be not at all trustworthy or sincere. Many people also think that some of the Katoeys are engaged in crimes such as theft or pickpocket. But, my suggestion is, do not go for such generalized opinions. It is best to judge things on your own.

Many men also entertain the idea of dating some Katoey. There is nothing wrong in this as long as you are comfortable with such orientations. But be cautious that you are not being fooled by some Katoey whom you meet and feel attracted towards taking him for a woman. Your whole idea of dating while holidaying may be completely ruined as a result of such a mistake.
